MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Spok, Inc. today announced that its public safety solutions provide
next-generation 9-1-1 technology as well as integration with existing
systems. Support for NG9-1-1 will enable 9-1-1 call centers (PSAPs) to
receive not only voice calls from both landlines and cell phones, but
also SMS-based text communications and photos. This information allows
dispatchers to provide as much detail as possible to those responding.
More information enables first responders to better address the safety
and well-being of local residents. Organizations spanning military
bases, local governments, hospitals, colleges, and universities select
Spok because of its track record in public safety as well as its ability
to integrate with both new and existing systems.
Older public safety technology connects to the public phone network
using a technology called PRI (primary rate interface). Although this
interface technology continues to evolve, SIP (session initiated
protocol) has become the technology of choice, allowing maximum data
transfer. Older systems can only integrate with PRI, while integration
via SIP requires next-generation technology.
“Being able to respond to emergencies quickly is essential for our
customers in their quest to maintain safety. They need to be able to
leverage the latest changes in 9-1-1 technology to do this,” said Terry
Eby, Spok public safety product line manager. “Our hybrid 9-1-1 call
center solution is capable of connecting via either PRI or SIP, allowing
it to evolve with our customers’ needs. Spok will be SIP ready two years
in advance of the Local Exchange Carrier mandate to close PRI usage.”
Spok will demo its public safety solutions at the Association of
Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Annual Conference & Expo,
August 3-6 in New Orleans. Join us at booth #1010 to learn about Spok’s
forward-looking public safety solutions.
